Brain Injury

A brain injury is, quite obviously, a very serious thing. Traumatic brain injuries cause many deaths, especially in younger people. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the leading causes of traumatic brain injuries are falls, motor vehicle accidents, and being struck in the head. If you suffer a traumatic brain injury as a result of any of these causes, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.

If you were in a car accident and you struck your head, or if you fell and hit your head, or if someone hit you in the head, how would you know if you had suffered a traumatic brain injury? There are a whole host of symptoms that could tip you off. If you were unconscious after the blow, this is a good indicator of a traumatic brain injury. Other symptoms include headaches, ringing ears, vomiting and nausea, blurred vision, dizziness, memory impairment, fatigue, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, lack of concentration, confusion, lightheadedness, and lack of balance.

Unfortunately, there are two phases to a brain injury. There is the primary injury which is the damage that occurs at the time the trauma actually occurs. But there is usually a secondary injury that occurs in the minutes and days after the primary injury. Without getting too complicated, the brain continues to react to the trauma subsequent to the primary injury, and these secondary injuries actually account for the majority of deaths that result from traumatic brain injuries. It is important that you see a doctor immediately after being struck in the head regardless of how you feel immediately after the trauma.

The long-term effects of a traumatic brain injury are numerous and serious. Below is a list of just some of the long-term effects that can result from this type of injury:

  • Comas
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Memory loss
  • Loss of learning ability
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased communication skills
  • Loss of hearing and/or eyesight
  • Loss of balance, vertigo
  • Chronic headaches
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain
  • Incontinence
