Texas Republican Party Drops Lawsuit Against Guest & Gray

Lawyer is putting stamp on the document

Last year, the Republican Party of Texas voluntarily dismissed its lawsuit against Guest & Gray and two of its attorneys, Elizabeth Alvarez and Scott Gray. Guest & Gray had been sued as part of an dispute with the Republican Party. The dismissal ends the lawsuit against the largest law firm in Kaufman County and one of the top election law firms in the State of Texas.

Republican Party of Texas Files Notice of Dismissal

On September 3, 2024, the Republican Party of Texas filed a notice of nonsuit with prejudice, which permanently dismissed its claims against Guest & Gray, Alvarez, and Gray. The day after the Texas Republican Party filed its notice of dismissal, Judge Ginny Revera of the 32nd Judicial District of Mitchell County signed an order granting the notice of dismissal, officially permanently dismissing the case with no chance for the Texas Republican Party to refile the lawsuit.

The lawsuit stemmed from several election contests filed by Harris County Republican candidates who lost in the 2022 general election. The Texas Republican Party had alleged that Guest & Gray falsely led the candidates to believe they could prove voter suppression in Harris County. Nearly two dozen of Harris County’s polling places ran out of paper on Election Day, leading the Texas Legislature to abolish the county’s elections office in Spring 2023 due to the errors. Guest & Gray denied the allegations in the lawsuit, explaining that it planned to model its approach in the elections challenges on the Department of Justice’s system for evaluating the effect of poll closures under the Voting Rights Act.

The resolution of the high-profile dispute via a voluntary dismissal with prejudice reinforces Guest & Gray’s reputation as a leading authority in election and political law..
